New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez joined Union Pacific Chairman and CEO Jack Koraleski in ceremonially opening UP's new 2,200-acre facility in Santa Teresa, N.M. on Wednesday, May 28, 2014.

The site, developed at a cost of $400 million, lies just west of the Santa Teresa Airport; it began operations last month. It includes a fueling station, crew change buildings, and an intermodal ramp with an annual lift capacity of around 225,000 containers, UP said.

The railroad expects the site to aid efficiency on UP's Sunset Route between Los Angeles and El Paso, Tex. "Our new rail facility in New Mexico is a key part of our relentless effort to create value for our customers through safety, service and efficiency," Koraleski said.

The site will be home to between 300 and 600 permanent jobs once the facility reaches full capacity. The project's estimated overall economic impact to New Mexico exceeds $500 million.
