Class I employment rises in June

Figures released by the Surface Transportation Board show total Class I railroad employment as of mid-June 2014 rose 1.02%, to 166,139, from June 2013, and also gained modestly previous month, up 0.03%.

Transportation (train and engine), per recent months, continued to add employees, up a robust 2.08% measured against levels of a year ago, and also gaining 0.63% from May 2014. 

Categories gaining year-over-year also included Executives, officials, and staff assistants, up 1.06% from June 2013, and Maintenance of equipment and stores, barely edging up 0.01%. Three categories declined from employment levels of one year ago: Maintenance of way and structures, down 0.67%, Professional and administrative, down 0.21%, and Transportation (other than train and engine), down 0.09%.

Other categories marking monthly gains over mid-May include Professional and administrative, which led all categories with a 2.40% month-over-month rise, and Executives, officials, and staff assistants, up 0.43% from mid-May. The three categories declining from mid-May levels included: Maintenance of way and structures, down 1.61%; Maintenance of equipment and stores, down 0.42%; and Transportation (other than train and engine), down 0.38%.
