Work is scheduled to begin Monday, Sept. 15, 2014, on the Harlem River Lift Bridge spanning the namesake estuary and linking Manhattan and the Bronx. The good news for Metro-North riders: Service will be largely unaffected by the work.
Work on the 60-year-old bridge will result in a shutdown of water traffic for at least six months. New cables and electrical components are expected to be installed.
The bridge, about 4 ½ miles north of Grand Central Terminal, reportedly is the only moveable bridge in New York State, though nearby New Jersey has many such structures handling both road and rail traffic. Many of those, including Amtrak's Portal Bridge (a swing bridge) on the Northeast Corridor in the New Jersey Meadowlands, are considered overdue for rehabilitation and/or replacement.
