Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LACMTA) officials and others on Saturday, Oct. 18, 2014 marked the completion of trackwork for the Foothill Gold Line extension of light rail transit at the line's future terminal station in Azusa, Calif.
The extension, funded in part by county Measure R funds approved by voters in 2008, extends the Gold Line east from Sierra Madre Villa Station. The extension includes six other stops, including Azusa Pacific University and Citrus College, both to be served by the APU/Citrus College Station.
LACMTA has begun receiving the first of 78 light rail vehicles from Kinkisharyo, which plans to use its Palmdale, Calif., facility for some of the work on the cars, some of which will provide Foothill Gold Line service.
Local media note APU and Citrus "were two of several education institutions lobbying for a light rail station near their campuses and have remained involved in the APU/Citrus station's development," somewhat counter to U.S. educational facilities elsewhere in the nation that have balked at encouraging direct LRT access to campuses.
