ASLRRA 2014 Safety Awards

The American Short Line Rail and Regional Association (ASLRRA) has announced the winners of its 2014 Safety Awards, including Safety Person of the Year, Safety Professional of the Year, Most Improved Award, the President’s Awards, Jake Awards with Distinction, and Jake Awards.

Portland & Western Railroad received the award for the most hours of injury-free operation. For maintaining the best safety rate, Union Railroad Company won the 500,000 or more man-hours worked category; Portland & Western Railroad, 250,000 to 500,000 category; Fort Worth & Western Railroad, 150,000 to 250,000 category; Ohio Central Railroad Co., 50,000 to 150,000 category, and Florida Central Railroad, less than 50,000 category.

Newburgh & South Shore Railroad and Northern Ohio & Western Railway (OmniTRAX Inc.) General Manager Billie Johnson is ASLRRA’s 2014 Safety Person of the Year. Mike Lundell,
Genesee & Wyoming Railroad Services, Inc., is Safety Professional of the Year. Buckingham Branch Railroad Company earned the award for Most Improved Safety Record.

“2014 was a successful year from a safety standpoint for ASLRRA member railroads,” ASLRRA said. “274 railroad members earned Jake Awards with Distinction for reaching the ultimate goal of achieving a 0.00 FSI for the entire year, and 40 additional railroads received Jake Awards for having an injury rate lower than the industry average of 2.68,” ASLRRA said.

“These awards have been made possible by our ASLRRA Safety Awards Program Sponsors,” ASLRRA noted. “The Safety Program enables us to recognize the continuing efforts of our members to maintain a high level of safety.”
