FRA awards $21.2 million in grants

Written by: William C. Vantuono, Editor-in-ChiefThe Federal Railroad Administration has awarded eight grants totaling more than $21.2 million for projects involving grade crossing safety, Positive Train Control implementation and passenger rail.

FRA awarded the grants as part of a Notice of Funding Availability it issued in July 2014 to distribute new Fiscal Year 2014 Omnibus funding, as well as unobligated funds from the High Speed Intercity Passenger Rail Program.

The eight grants were awarded for a variety of projects:

• California Department of Transportation: $2.2 million for the Pacific Surfliner Chesterfield Drive Crossing Improvements project.

• Illinois Department of Transportation: $2 million for the Springfield, Ill., Ash Street Underpass.

• TTCI: $432,000 for the PTC Implementation Project Interoperable Train Control Messaging Security program.

• Amtrak: $2.6 million for the Wireless Communication and Key Management Implementation project.

• ARINC Inc.: $4.99 million for the Implementation of PTC Shared Network and User Support project.

• New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority: $3 million for the Metro North Hudson Line PTC project.

• California Department of Transportation: $2.98 million for the Coachella Valley-San Gorgonio Pass Corridor Investment Plan.

• Illinois Department of Transportation: $3 million for the Chicago Union Station Terminal Planning Study.
