Beginning on August 21, 2015 and steaming right through to August 28, Railroad Reality Week, a week-long railroad summer camp that lets participants experience what it was like during the golden age of railroading by working on a national historic landmark and one of the best preserved standard gauge railroads in America, is coming to the Nevada Northern Railway Museum in Ely, Nev.

“Railroad Reality Week is a great way to experience what it was like during the golden age of railroads, and help preserve a piece of history at the same time,” the museum says. “Think of it as a dude ranch for the railroad enthusiast.”

Campers begin by attending the museum’s rules and safety training are then tested afterward. After training and testing, campers will rotate through train operations, working in the shop and out on the track.

As part of the crew, participants will help get a train over a hill and back again safely, work on tracks, get greasy hands-on experience maintaining the locomotives and cars and work in a switch crew, taking turns as engineer, brakeman and switchman.

“Railroad Reality Week is an adventure of a lifetime, an escape to a different time and an authentic experience participants won’t soon forget,” the museum says.
