Ontario, Canada Premier Kathleen Wynne unveiled the first of 16 refurbished Polar Bear Express passenger cars in North Bay on Aug. 12, 2016.
Ontario has invested C$17 million (US $13.2 million) in the Polar Bear Express upgrade to modernize a rail service that provides an essential link in the north. Operated by Ontario Northland Railway, it is the only year-round ground transport link connecting Cochrane with Moosonee and the James Bay Coast.
The refurbished railcars will provide new seats with electrical and USB charging, accessible washrooms, modern flooring, enhanced luggage space, comfortable dining and snack cars, and a family coach outfitted with an enclosed play area for children and comfortable seating for parents.
