The Acciona-Odebrecht construction consortium, building the first metro line in the Ecuadorian capital Quito has commissioned Siemens to electrify the line.

The scope of the project includes 46km (29 miles) of rigid catenary, 6km (4 miles) of standard catenary, 11 traction power supply stations, 29 auxiliary power supply stations, and the supervisory control and data acquisition system for monitoring and controlling the traction power supply.

Line 1 will connect El Labrador in the north of the city and Quitumbe in the south.

The 20km (12.4 mile) line will be one of the highest metros in the world, and will have 15 stations. Passenger service is scheduled to begin in 2019, and the line is expected to transport more than 350,000 passengers per day.
