A new inland rail-served port is coming to the U.S.-Canada border.

Mid Canada Transload Services Ltd. is building the center with rail access in southern Manitoba, what it calls one of the largest privately-owned inland ports in the province.

The 250-acre greenfield site is one mile south of Letellier, MB and seven miles from the border with the United States. Located along export/import Manitoba Highway 75, it will have access to two Class 1 railroads, CN and BNSF, and will have daily rail service to and from the U.S. and Mexico.

The idea for the facility originated with Real Tetrault, president and chief executive of Emerson Milling, an oat milling plant in Emerson, MB. The company said it is already shipping oat products on CN to the U.S. and Mexico via interchange in Emerson with BNSF.

The industrial park will facilitate transload of other products, particularly the agricultural trade as a private producer car-loading site. Tetrault also wants to capitalize on "Identity Preserved" grain shipments to millers and processing plants.

"Cross-border trade is vital to the growth and prosperity of Manitoba's economy," said Manitoba's Growth, Enterprise and Trade Minister Cliff Cullen. "This development is strategically positioned with direct links to international markets. Manitoba producers, processors and small and mid-size shippers will benefit from the opportunities this new inland port will provide."

Mid Canada Transload Services will also handle other commodities and manufactured products that travel in and out of Manitoba and Saskatchewan by rail.
