Denver's Regional Transportation District (RTD) on Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2013 awarded a $343 million contract to Graham, Balfour Beatty, Hamon Constructors for construction of the region's first electrified regional/commuter passenger rail line.

Dubbed the North Metro line, the route just one element of RTD's FasTracks program involving multiple modes. North Metro will run from 124th Avenue south to Denver Union Station, the latter terminus evolving as a key hub for Colorado's capital, served by RTD light rail, buses, and Amtrak's California Zephyr.

The contract team is charged with completing work on the electrified line's first phase by January 2018. Contractors have committed to finish the line to 124th by January 2018.

Depending on available funding RTD can then exercise an option with the contractor team and issue a notice to proceed to continue the line to 162nd Street, according to RTD General Manager Phil Washington.
