Utah Transit Authority's Sugar House streetcar is set to begin carrying passengers on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013, with initial free ridership in exchange for a nonperishable food item to be donated to the Utah Food bank.

UTA says the line will begin revenue service the next day, with a promotional fare of $1 for those using electronic fare media. Most UTA passes also will be valid on the streetcar line, UTA says. Service by cash payment will by $2.50.

Said UTA General Manager Michael Allegra, "We're excited to present the public with a unique way to explore South Salt Lake and Sugar House neighborhoods and access local stores, restaurants and businesses."

The 1.9-mile, seven-stop S-Line, using Siemens S70 cars modified from UTA's order for S70 light rail vehicles, connects to the TRAX LRT system at Central Pointe Station (2100 South). UTA has been testing the system since last August in preparation for the service launch.

The project is a joint effort advanced by Salt Lake City, South Salt Lake City, and UTA.
