Opening ceremonies for MTA New York City Transit's Fulton Center are scheduled for the June 26, 2014, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority noted Monday, March 24.
Part of a massive makeover of subway connections in lower Manhattan, the Fulton Center streamlines transfers for 11 subway lines, including a below-ground walkway that links with PATH's own new station at the World Trade Center site, due to be completed in 2015.
"Prior to the Fulton Center project, passengers had to maneuver through a complicated series of ramps, stairs, and passageways to access their trains, with frequent bottlenecks," MTA says on its website. Platform overcrowding and lack of ADA [Americans with Disabilities Act] accessibility also made the complex difficult to navigate."
Last December MTA announced it had designated the mall developer/operator Westfield as the master lessee for substantial portions of the Fulton Center, which basically involves oversight of "the majority of the non-station areas of the Fulton Center complex."
