June employment up over year ago, prior month

Figures released Monday, July 22, 2013, by the Surface Transportation Board show Class I railroads employed 164,499 people in mid-June, up 0.80% from June 2012, and up 220 people, or 0.13%, from the previous month of May.

For a third straight month, all categories save one gained year-over-year, with Transportation (other than train and engine) again notching the sole year-over-year loss, down 1.46%. The top gainer in June, also repeating for a third straight month, was Professional and administrative, up 3.04% in mid-June from a year ago. Executives, officials, and staff assistants gained 1.46%; Transportation (train and engine), rose 0.72%; Maintenance of equipment and stores advanced 0.63%; and Maintenance of way and structures rose 0.49%.

Only three of six categories gained ground in mid-June from mid-May levels. Professional and Administrative led the pack here as well, up 2.20%, followed by Executives, officials and staff assistants, up 0.56%, and Transportation (train and enginer), up 0.24%.

Decliners included Maintenance of equipment and stores, down 0.63%, Transportation (other than train and engine), down 0.37%, and Maintenance of way and structures, down 0.24%.
