Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LACMTA) analysts are recommending two contractors be selected to construct the Downtown Regional Connector, improving connections among LA's subway and light rail lines.
The LACMTA report, released Tuesday, April 15, 2014, recommends awarding a $927 million joint contract to New York-based Skanska USA and Evansville, Ind.-based Traylor Bros., Inc. Both companies are currently involved in other regional rail projects, according to local media.
LA Metro directors are expected to vote on the Downtown Regional Connector contract, along with budget adjustments, at a meeting April 24.
LA Metro still is waiting for the Los Angeles Police Commission to approve permits for construction work at various times of day, including nights, holidays, and weekends.
The 1.9-mile, $1.46 billion Downtown Regional Connector will provide underground access between LA's Union Station and 7th Street/Metro Center Station (Staples Center), uniting Metro Blue, Gold, and Expo light rail transit (LRT) lines and eliminating several transfers now required. It is scheduled to open for passenger service in 2020.
Last month rehabilitation work on Union Station began as part of a larger effort by LA Metro to restore the historic station to a state of good repair.
Last February LACMTA officials and other transport personnel formally received a $670 million federal grant aiding a Downtown Regional Connector, scheduled to open in 2020.
