Figures released by the Surface Transportation Board show Class I railroad employment rose 0.31% in mid-April 2014, measured against a year earlier, and also advanced 0.81% from mid-March levels.

Transportation (train and engine) powered the year-over-year gain, overcoming declines in four employment categories; it also rose 1.06% over mid-March levels, according to STB data released Monday, May 19, 2014.

Also aiding the monthly gain over mid-March: Maintenance of way and structures, advancing 1.28%. More modest gains from the prior month were registered by Transportation (other than train and engine), up 0.57%, and Maintenance of equipment and stores, up 0.52%.

Two categories slipped from mid-March, though marginally. Executives, officials, and staff assistants declined 0.34%, while Professional and administrative employees fell 0.07%.

Compared with a year ago, Professional and administrative slipped 0.99%, Transportation (other than train and engine) fell 0.91%, Maintenance of way and structures retreated 0.82%, and Maintenance of equipment and stores declined 0.6%.
