With a reportable injury rate of 0.85, Union Pacific employees achieved record first-quarter safety performance, demonstrating ongoing progress toward the company’s ultimate goal of zero incidents.
Among its 48,000 employees, UP’s safety culture development led to a 23% injury rate improvement versus first-quarter 2014. A railroad’s reportable injury rate is the total number of injuries reportable to the Federal Railroad Administration per 200,000 worker hours, which is equivalent to 100 employees working a full year.
Helping to decrease the reportable injury rate, many UP employees participate in Courage to Care, “a personal commitment to provide feedback to fellow employees to fix unsafe situations and to have the courage to accept feedback from coworkers—ensuring everyone goes home safe,” the company said.
“Employees’ commitment to looking out for one another coupled with the company processes, training and resources are moving safety in the right direction,” said Bob Grimalia, UP Vice President of Safety, Security and Environment. “Still, we will not be satisfied until we achieve our goal of zero incidents.”
