Train and engine crew employment climbs in July

Employment figures released by the Surface Transportation Board for July 2013 show that Class I railroads employed 163,956 people, up 1.20% from July 2012, though down 0.31%, from the previous month of June 2013.

The top gainer year-over-year was Transportation (train and engine), up 2.10% from the previous year, and up 0.18% from June 2013. All categories except one gained year-over-year, with Maintenance of Equipment and Stores the only year-over-year loss, down 0.77%.

Professional and Administrative employment climbed 1.97% from July 2012, but dropped 2.06% from the previous month. Maintenance of Way and Structures rose 1.07% from the prior year, and 0.19% from the prior month.
