Darien, Conn.-based Genesee & Wyoming said Monday, Nov. 11, 2013 its October traffic volume rose 104.2% compared with its comparable traffic one year ago, and up 6.3% from October 2012 when traffic from RailAmerica lines are factored. GWI assumed control of RailAmerica rail lines late last year.
Consolidated pro-forma increases, "as though G&W had acquired RailAmerica on January 1, 2012," were led by gains in metallic ores (up 50%), metals (up 24.4%), and petroleum products (up 20%). The gains include GWI operations in Australia as well as North America.
The Surface Transportation Board (STB) approved Genesee & Wyoming Inc.'s application to control RailAmerica, Inc., and the RailAmerica railroads, effective Dec. 28, 2012.
Notwithstanding the accident and explosion on the Alabama & Gulf Coast Railway in Pickens County, Ala., Friday, Nov. 8, involving crude-by-rail cars, the company noted, "Petroleum products traffic increased 1,502 carloads primarily due to increased shipments of crude oil in G&W's Pacific Region."
