Figures released by the Surface Transportation Board show total Class I railroad employment as of mid-March 2014 rose 0.40%, to 162,968, from the same period in February 2014, and registered only a miniscule decrease of 0.06% from the year-earlier (March 2013) period.
All categories except Executives, Officials, and Staff Assistants, which dropped 0.19% to 9.842, scored a monthly gain: Professional and Administrative, up 0.05% to 13,972; Maintenance-of-Way and Structures, up 1.21% to 36,506; Maintenance of Equipment and Stores, up 0.14% to 29, 718; Transportation (Other Than Tran and Engine), up 0.59% to 6,687; and Transportation (Train and Engine), up 0.22% to 66,243.
Only two categories grew over year-ago levels: Transportation (Train and Engine), up 1.01%; and Executives, Officials, and Staff Assistants, up 0.64%.
